How to Choose a Challah Cover: Size, Style and Care Guide
A challah cover is one of the smallest pieces on a Shabbat table, yet it sets the tone for the whole meal. It is the first thing your guests see when they sit down, and the moment you lift it to say the blessing over the bread is one of the most beautiful of the week. If you are choosing your first challah cover, replacing an old one or looking for a meaningful gift, this guide walks you through everything worth knowing: why we cover the challah, what size to look for, how to pick a style that fits your table and how to care for it so it lasts for years.
Why do we cover the challah?
There are two lovely explanations for the custom. The first goes back to the manna in the desert: it fell each morning between two layers of dew, one below and one above. On Shabbat we place two loaves of challah on a board or tray and cover them with a cloth, recreating that picture of a gift wrapped and protected.
The second explanation is about sensitivity. On Shabbat, Kiddush is said over the wine before the blessing over the bread. Tradition teaches that we cover the challah so that it is not "embarrassed" while the wine is honored first. Many families love sharing this idea with children: if we are careful with the feelings of a loaf of bread, how much more careful should we be with the people around our table.
Whichever meaning speaks to you, the challah cover turns a simple cloth into a small ritual of care.
What size challah cover do you need?
A challah cover should hide both loaves completely, with a little fabric to spare so the edges fall softly around the bread. As a guide:
- Around 18 x 15 inches fits two medium challot or one large braided loaf comfortably. Most of our challah covers measure 18.5 x 15.75 in, a size that works on standard challah boards and in bread baskets.
- Larger covers are useful if you bake extra-long or round holiday challot, or if you like to cover the whole challah board.
- Smaller covers look sweet for a single small loaf or rolls, but can leave the ends of the bread showing.
Before you buy, measure your challah board or the space your loaves usually take up. If the cover is a little larger than the board, you are in good shape.
Choose a style that matches your table
Your challah cover does not have to be traditional velvet with gold embroidery (though that is lovely too). Today you can find designs that fit every kind of home. A few directions to consider:
Floral and romantic
Soft flowers bring a light, elegant feeling to the table and work beautifully with white or cream tableware. Lilac Reverie, framed by lilac blooms and sage-toned roses, is our most loved floral challah cover. Blush Garden is even more delicate, in subtle blush tones.
Botanical and garden-inspired
If you love greenery, botanical prints make the table feel fresh and calm. Artichoke Dreams layers deep greens and purples around the words Shabbat Shalom in Hebrew, and Botanical Dreams features blooming florals and butterflies with the inscription Shabbat V'Yom Tov.
Modern and graphic
For a contemporary home, a bold pattern can become the centerpiece of the table. Midnight Illusion plays with black-and-white contrast, while Tropical Geometry mixes vibrant florals with a geometric pattern.
For the holidays
Some families keep a special challah cover for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Tov. Designs with holiday symbols, such as a pomegranate or the greeting Shana Tova, make the table feel different from an ordinary Shabbat and become part of your family's holiday memories.
With or without Hebrew text
Many challah covers carry a Hebrew inscription, most often Shabbat Shalom, Shabbat Kodesh or Shabbat V'Yom Tov. A cover with Shabbat V'Yom Tov can be used all year, for both Shabbat and holidays. A cover without text is the most versatile of all and can double as a bread cloth for any festive meal.
Think about the whole table
A challah cover looks its best when it belongs to the rest of the table. You do not need everything to match, but repeating one color or motif makes a table feel considered and calm. Some ideas:
- Coordinate with your placemats or table runner. Every Shaloom Living challah cover is part of a full collection, so you can pair it with matching placemats, a bread basket and, for many designs, a table runner.
- Mix one statement piece with simple linens. A bold challah cover on a plain white tablecloth lets the design shine.
- Pick up a color from your dishes or flowers. If you always set fresh flowers on Friday, choose a challah cover in a similar palette.
- Keep the candlesticks in mind. Silver and brass both work with most designs; colorful prints look especially warm with brass.
Fabric and care
A challah cover is used every week and sits close to crumbs, wine and the occasional spill, so practical fabric matters as much as the design. Look for a cover made from a durable, easy-care fabric that keeps its shape and color.
Our challah covers should not go in the washing machine. To keep them looking new:
- Shake off crumbs after each meal.
- Spot clean spills gently with a damp cloth as soon as possible.
- Let the cover air dry flat.
- Store it folded or rolled in a drawer away from direct sunlight so the colors stay vivid.
A challah cover as a gift
A beautiful challah cover is one of the most meaningful Judaica gifts you can give. It is used every single week, it is personal without being too personal and it fits any budget. It is a natural choice for:
- A couple getting married or a bride preparing for her first Shabbat
- A housewarming, especially for a first home
- A thank-you gift for a Shabbat host
- Rosh Hashanah, Hanukkah or a bat or bar mitzvah
For a more generous gift, pair the challah cover with matching placemats or a bread basket from the same collection.
Quick checklist
- Covers both loaves completely (around 18 x 15 inches or more)
- A design that fits your table and your taste
